Description:

Three
types of opioid receptors have been cloned -- mu, delta,
and kappa. Opioid receptors are seven transmembrane G-protein
coupled receptors. They share a high degree of homology
and are most divergent at the N- and C-termini. The kappa
opioid receptor has been cloned in multiple species including
mouse, rat, guinea pig, and human and is very highly conserved
in these species. By coupling to inhibitory G-proteins,
kappa opioid receptors cause a decrease in neuronal excitability.
Kappa opioid receptors are found in brain, spinal cord,
and sensory neurons. They have been shown to exist as homo-
and heterodimers. Delta/kappa opioid receptor dimers appear
to account for the pharmacologically described kappa-3
receptors.
