Description:

Three types of opioid receptors have been cloned -- mu, delta, and kappa. Opioid receptors are seven transmembrane G-protein coupled receptors. They share a high degree of homology and are most divergent at the N- and C-termini. The delta opioid receptor is highly conserved among species and is highly expressed in brain and spinal cord. Activation of the delta opioid receptor can lead to a decrease in neuronal excitability by either decreasing calcium conductance or increasing potassium conductance by its coupling to inhibitory G-proteins. Interaction with G-proteins is thought to occur via the third intracelluar loop. Long term exposure to agonists can cause desensitization and down-regulation. Recently, delta opioid receptors have been shown to exist as both homo- and heterodimers.
