Description:

The Wnt gene family consists of structurally related genes that encode cysteine-rich secreted glycoproteins that act as extracellular signaling factors. The Wnt protein family regulate many cellular processes, including cell fate decisions and cell proliferation, and aberrant Wnt signaling is associated with tumorigenesis. Many Wnt proteins act via a signaling pathway that results in stabilization of beta-catenin and consequent transcriptional activation of specific target genes. Mutations in beta-catenin or other Wnt pathway components, which result in beta-catenin accumulation, are found in a wide range of human cancers. Wnt-1. Wnt-1 (previously known as int-1) is a proto-oncogene induced by the integration of the mouse mammary tumor virus and a ligand for members of the frizzled family of seven transmembrane receptors. It is thought to play a role in intercellular communication and seems to be a signalling molecule important in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). The sequence of wnt-1 is highly conserved in mammals, fish, and amphibians.
