Description:

Human Resistin is a hormone which links obesity to Type 2 diabetes. Type II diabetes , characterized by target-tissue resistance to insulin , is epidemic in industrialized societies and is strongly associated with obesity. Steppan et al. (2001) studied the mechanism by which increased adiposity causes insulin resistance. They demonstrated that adipocytes secrete a unique signaling molecule, which they called resistin (for resistance to insulin), that may be the hormone potentially linking obesity to diabetes.
