Description:

Interleukin-8
(IL8) induces rapid mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor
cells (HPCs) from the bone marrow of rhesus monkeys. Because
activation of neutrophils by IL8 induces the release of
MMP9, which is involved in the degradation of extracellular
matrix molecules. MMP9 release might induce stem cell mobilization
by cleaving matrix molecules to which stem cells are attached.
Mobilization of HPCs could be prevented by pretreatment
with an inhibitory anti-gelatinase B antibody, indicating
that MMP9 is involved as a mediator of the IL8-induced
mobilization of HPCs. MMP9-mediated N-terminal cleavage
of IL8 potentiates IL8 activation of neutrophils, as measured
by increased intracellular calcium, MMP9 secretion, and
neutrophil chemotaxis.
